The eKasi Business Fair was an initiative of the Icebolethu Foundation, the CSI wing of the Icebolethu Group, aimed at creating meaningful opportunities for township entrepreneurs and contributing to sustainable local economic development.
Hosted in Hammarsdale, the Fair became more than just an exhibition platform. It created a space where small businesses could showcase their products and services, connect with stakeholders, gain exposure and access opportunities that can help them grow beyond their immediate communities.
Through collaboration with EDTEA and various stakeholders, the initiative demonstrated how CSI can move beyond once-off giving and become a practical tool for empowerment, skills development and economic participation.
One of the key highlights of the Fair was the “Pitch Your Business” session, where 12 entrepreneurs were given the opportunity to present their businesses. From these presentations, four businesses were selected to receive R50,000 in funding, with a further opportunity for two businesses to secure R100,000. This transformed the Fair from a networking event into a direct pathway for business advancement and funding access.
The event also highlighted the importance of partnerships between the private sector, government and local entrepreneurs. By bringing these stakeholders together, the eKasi Business Fair helped bridge the gap between township businesses and the support structures required for growth and sustainability.
The success of the initiative reinforced the Icebolethu Foundation’s commitment to uplifting communities through impactful CSI programmes that focus on long-term development rather than short-term interventions.
Overall, the eKasi Business Fair set a strong precedent for future empowerment programmes, proving that with the right support, township entrepreneurs can thrive, scale their businesses and contribute meaningfully to the broader economy.
